Our Approach
We recognise that behaviour can be a form of communication, especially for learners managing sensory or emotional challenges. Our approach is based on Positive Behaviour Support, working closely with learners and their circle of support to:
- Understand triggers
- Use de‑escalation strategies
- Create personalised behaviour support plans
Our goal is always to support learning, wellbeing and personal development, not punishment.
What We Expect from Learners
All learners are expected to:
- Treat others with respect and kindness
- Follow college rules and health & safety guidance
- Attend sessions punctually and engage with learning
- Avoid bullying, violence, abusive language or unlawful behaviour
- Respect college property and the local community
These expectations apply on campus and during offsite activities, including work experience and performances.
Supporting Positive Behaviour
We celebrate positive behaviour that benefits:
- The learner themselves
- Other learners
- Staff, volunteers and visitors
Positive behaviour may be recognised through:
- Celebrate Success certificates
- Additional opportunities
- Positive feedback shared with families (with consent)
When Behaviour Becomes Challenging
If behaviour affects learning, safety or wellbeing, staff will:
- Use supportive strategies to help the learner regulate
- Offer time in a quiet space if needed
- Adapt environments or activities where possible
- Involve managers and families if concerns continue
Every effort is made to help learners re‑engage with learning.
Behaviour Levels & Responses
We use a clear, shared framework:
- Green – Positive, respectful and engaged behaviour
Recognition and encouragement - Amber – Lower‑level behaviours affecting others
Support plans, discussions, and agreed consequences - Red – Serious behaviours impacting safety or wellbeing
Immediate management, formal review, and possible suspension
All decisions are made fairly, consistently and proportionately.
Exclusion & Disciplinary Process
Formal action is only taken when:
- Serious incidents occur, or
- Persistent behaviour does not improve despite support
The process includes:
- Warnings (verbal and written)
- Disciplinary review, if necessary
- Right of appeal, ensuring learners are heard and supported
Permanent exclusion is a last resort.
Keeping Everyone Safe
In serious cases involving criminal activity (such as assault or theft), external agencies including the Police or Local Authorities may be contacted.
All incidents are:
- Recorded on the learner’s behaviour log
- Reviewed by senior staff
- Managed in line with safeguarding and safety policies
Support for Learners and Staff
After incidents, we provide:
- Debriefs and check‑ins
- Emotional and wellbeing support
- Specialist training for staff in behaviour support
- Access to confidential staff support services
Our Commitment
We are committed to:
- Equality, dignity and respect for all
- Supporting learners to succeed
- Working collaboratively with families and professionals
- Reviewing our approach to ensure it remains effective and fair
