Infection Control and Management of Outbreaks Policy Summary

The Orpheus Centre is committed to protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of all students, staff, volunteers and visitors by reducing the spread of infectious illnesses. This includes respiratory infections (such as COVID‑19 and flu), as well as gastrointestinal infections like diarrhoea and vomiting.

Who this policy applies to

This policy applies to everyone who uses the Orpheus Centre, including students, staff, volunteers, visitors and contractors.

Our approach

Orpheus follows nationally recognised infection prevention and control principles and complies with all relevant health and safety, employment and equality legislation. While COVID‑19 is now managed alongside other infectious diseases, clear measures remain in place to minimise disruption to education while keeping people safe.

Key principles

We reduce infection risk by breaking the chain of infection and applying the hierarchy of controls, prioritising prevention before relying on personal protective equipment (PPE).

Everyday infection prevention

We use Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions (SICPs) at all times, including:

  • Good hand hygiene
  • Respiratory and cough etiquette
  • Appropriate use of PPE based on risk
  • Safe cleaning and disinfection of environments and equipment
  • Safe handling of laundry, waste, blood and bodily fluids
  • Effective ventilation of indoor spaces

All staff, students and visitors are expected to follow these measures, with additional support provided where needed.

Staying away when unwell

People with symptoms of infectious illness must stay away from Orpheus for the recommended exclusion period, following UK Health Security Agency guidance. This includes:

  • Diarrhoea and vomiting – stay away until symptom‑free for at least 48 hours
  • Respiratory infections, including COVID‑19 – stay at home if unwell or unable to carry out normal activities

Remote learning will be provided where appropriate to reduce disruption to education.

Managing outbreaks

An outbreak is defined as two or more linked cases of the same infection. Orpheus:

  • Monitors absences and reported illnesses closely
  • Escalates concerns internally to senior leaders
  • Works with the local Health Protection Team when needed
  • Follows expert advice on additional measures, communication and temporary controls

All personal information is handled confidentially.

Vaccination

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce serious illness from COVID‑19 and flu. Staff working in health and social care settings are strongly encouraged to keep vaccinations up to date using NHS services.

Shared responsibility

Keeping Orpheus safe is a shared responsibility. By following hygiene guidance, staying away when unwell and reporting concerns promptly, we can protect our community and maintain high‑quality, face‑to‑face education.
