A night filled with captivating performances, joyous energy, and remarkable musical talent marked the success of Joe Stilgoe & Friends in aid of the Orpheus Centre on 13 March 2025. Held at the renowned Alexandra Palace Theatre in London, the concert celebrated musical talent, with Stilgoe’s infectious charm drawing a diverse crowd of music lovers from across the city and beyond.
The evening opened with Joe Stilgoe’s signature style – a blend of witty lyrics, impeccable piano skills, and an unmistakable stage presence that instantly connected with the audience. The internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, known for his unique take on jazz and swing, was joined by an eclectic mix of guest performers, including Rhys Stephenson, Mel Giedroyc, Hadley Fraser, Fascinating Aïda, and the Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir. A few surprise guests also delighted the audience with their wondrous talents.
The concert showcased magnificent performances from the Orpheus Centre students and alumni, including a dramatic dance piece and song addressing ableism. Highlights of the evening included a heartwarming rendition of “Stars,” sung by Orpheus alumnus Angus Morton, and a sensational performance of “Queen of the Night,” sung by alumnus Charlotte Rowling, leaving the audience in awe.
Stilgoe’s musical versatility shone brightly as he seamlessly shifted between genres, delivering everything from classic jazz ballads to playful pop covers. His effortless piano solos, combined with outstanding contributions from his guest performers – accomplished entertainers in their own right – made for a dynamic and unforgettable show.
Among the special moments, Mel Giedroyc gave a heartfelt shout out to the wonderful Lesley Garrett, who then joined Stilgoe for an impromptu duet. Their collaboration was magical, and the chemistry between the two artists was evident throughout their performance.
The event supported the Orpheus Centre, a young disabled adults’ charity in Godstone, founded by Richard and Annabel Stilgoe in 1997. It was a testament to the power of community and the unifying nature of music.
Andrew Willetts, CEO of the Orpheus Centre, took to the stage after the interval to highlight the significance of the charity’s work. “We are putting Orpheus on the map,” said Andrew. “The national average for someone with a learning disability to enter into paid employment is 4.8%. At Orpheus, 29% of our students leave for paid employment. We want to continue supporting these amazing young people, and by being here, you do too.”
In a heartfelt thank-you message to the audience at the end of the show, Joe Stilgoe expressed his gratitude for their support and enthusiasm.
With rave reviews pouring in from attendees, the Joe Stilgoe & Friends event is being hailed as a triumph for the community. As the curtain fell on this truly memorable night, one thing was clear: Joe Stilgoe’s unique blend of charisma and musical talent blended beautifully with the gifted students of the Orpheus Centre.
Fans are already eagerly awaiting his next performance, while Orpheus hopes the magic of the Joe Stilgoe & Friends charity event will continue to inspire for years to come.
