Disability and arts News and blogs A Big Orpheus Welcome September is always an exciting month at Orpheus as the new term commences. We were thrilled to welcome new students Cameron, Charlie, Manny, Frankie, Santini, Jacob, Nandi, Oliver, Ronnie and Theo. Now a few weeks into their first term, they are settling in well to college life. Nandi said ‘I love Orpheus already. I’m grasping new skills every day – I’ve even started learning Makaton!’ We have also welcomed three new residential volunteers; Stefan from Germany, Johanna from Austria and Hatti from Leeds university. They will be with us for a year to assist in sessions and share their arts skills with the students. Stefan said ‘Orpheus is bigger than I expected and there is always lots going on! The staff, students and volunteers are so friendly; we have managed to settle in well.’ The first few weeks have been busy with cake sales, corporate volunteer days and the Freshers Fayre. The fayre gave students an opportunity to explore Orpheus, find out about the local community and buy Orpheus goodies! There were music therapy taster sessions, fire safety advice from the Godstone Fire Service, a chance to find out about Oxted Youth Theatre and much more. We look forward to getting to know the new students, staff and volunteers over the coming year.
