Paul Hollis, a volunteer at The Orpheus Centre, has just been awarded a place on the Vodafone World of Difference Programme. The programme gives 500 people in the UK the chance to work for their dream charity for 2 months. Paul was shortlisted last year when he applied for the programme and was successful, despite 10,000 other volunteers registering. Paul was encouraged to enter the programme by Orpheus Centre Volunteer Coordinator Sue Mitchell after she bore witness to the fantastic work Paul does at the centre.
The World of Difference Programme enables volunteers to work for a charity without having to face the financial strains of working for free. Paul, like other World of Difference winners will be paid for his 2 month placement.
The Orpheus Centre welcomes international, residential and local volunteers, as well as enablers who assist with short courses and productions. ‘We just couldn’t operate without our volunteers’ says Volunteer Coordinator Sue Mitchell, ‘their work is invaluable’. Of his achievement, Paul mentions ‘It’s really nice to give something back to the local community. I really enjoy what I do and seeing the students benefit from my volunteering is very rewarding’.
